    the weaker Kings of France and the more powerful Kings of England The King of France Philippe Auguste took the fortress back from King John and ordered its destruction However its strategic position was so important that in the same year he would ask to rebuild it During the XIII century the Anglo Norman influence was locally stronger while the French influence dominated generally Blanche de Castille and her son the young King Saint Louis captured Ballon again From that time on peace reigned in France and the country became more prosperous This prosperity would not last long During the one hundred year old war the Maine region was plagued by robbers and Ballon was inhabited by Robert le Mareschal who stole and plundered the whole area This was stopped by the French knight Du Guesclin whose legendary motto was without fear and without reproach Again French and English troops fought for the fortress and Ballon would be conquered at last by Joan of Arc s companions Olivier de Prez Lord of Ballon and his nephew Ambroise de Lore The Reconstruction of Ballon It was at the beginning of the XVI century that the reconstruction of the fortress started The land was sold at an auction at the Chatelet in Paris and bought by Jeanot d Ynurse an esquire from Burgundy married to Radegonde de Maridort daughter of the Lord of Souligne sous Ballon Ballon played yet again an important role during the religious wars King Henry IV would come and stay during his conquest of the West of France From the XVI century the importance of the fortress decreased as the significance of artillery in battles grew The medieval fortress did not play a major role in local history until the 21st July 1789 the black Thursday A crowd
