field to the right It looked good on the map but was actually slower than going straight Looking at the map more carefully I could have guessed that since one could use some trails and since it wasn t that hilly straight Approaching the first controls we entered a really rocky area with many branches on the ground It was really hard to run fast and it was very demanding physically I quickly understood that it was not a great day for me I could orienteer quite well but could not be very aggressive enough I was far from flying I got this feeling during the whole race and it was not just a feeling because I was never in a position to challenge any of the leaders on any leg I m almost always 10sec or more behind the best leg time I lost 10sec on controls 4 and 8 where I went out of the ideal route and leaving control 6 I knew where I was for 200meters and then totally lost control I decided to follow the compass and relocate when coming to the road which I partly managed to do I knew I was quite close to the straight line but was not sure at all Still I decided to continue and relocated in the forest 50meters after the road straight on the control It could have been much worse I started to be really tired in the more open part and tried to fight but the speed was not impressive still I lost 10seconds to the 15th control and Magne Daehlie who started 2 minutes behind me and who I had been running with during the qualification caught me up and passed me I was then behind him until the finish reading the map in

had exactly the attitude I want to have on a qualification race I started quite fast was a bit unsure to the first control as the area before my control a re entrant was rather diffuse lost 5 to 10seconds but as I saw my control I told myself to be even more accurate even if I had to make a few stops to read the map As I had the longest forking to the first control I had the other runners starting at the same time as me in sight and I could use them to increase my speed and I ended up catching up with them between controls 2 and 3 The two guys were Magne Daehlie and Pavel Kubat and as the three different heats had very similar courses more like a relay course than an usual qualification course I ended up running quite much with them which helped finding a good rythm I ran together with Magne until control 6 where we had different forkings and where I caught up several runners His forking was longer so I was suddenly in the lead and I orienteered alone very concentrated until control 11 To the 12th one when I climbed the hill I tried to get as close as possible to the top of the hill to have a good attack point but I was too much to the right and was too lazy to make the turn to go to the top Therefore I ran down the hill without knowing exactly where I was and when I hit the small trail I did not know where to go Not to take any more risk I went left and tried to spot the vegetation boundary between some white and light green forest found out where I was

control on my orienteering all the time The first problem came at the 7th control where I had some problem to read the ring and to know if it was possible to attack the control straight without being stopped by a wall or a closed gate I decided to go right and to attack the control from behind to avoid the risk My choice did not look much longer on the map but it turned out to be I lost 16 sec on this leg on the best time which is a lot on a so close race Then to the 13th control I had not anticipated when I punched the twelve and had to stop on the road to finally choose the right choice which I think was slower Lost 11sec on the best time It means in total around 20 25sec lost but it was tactical route choice mistakes and I can t blame many things except myself Going to the last two controls I was convinced that my race would be good enough for the final as I had run better than at EOC but yesterday it was much tighter and I was not on the right

was totally lost and had no possibility to relocate but to go back to the start point running on the opposite direction of the flow of runners trying to find their own forking After that I lost my self confidence and the course appeared to me as the most technical I had run in my whole life Don t think I never did such race since my beginnings at least not on a competition My physical shape was disastrous too I really felt the lack of training and the knee was still hurting which didn t really help The 358th leg time on this 4th leg did not give me the self confidence I needed one week before the two world cup stages in Switzerland rather the opposite Luckily I was running for Denseln s 2nd team During the week I managed to train properly and to get better feelings but still not perfect The pain gradually reduced The World Cup in St Gallen started with a middle distance in Appenzell on a terrain which I don t think was good enough to hold a World Cup event but that is my opinion I didn t make any mistake but
