  • Le Petit Palais - Portrait of Mademoiselle Athénaïs d’Albenas - petitpalais.paris.fr
Léopold Boilly La Bassée Nord 1761 Paris 1845 1807 Oil on canvas H 65 W 54 5 cm This charming portrait depicts the features of the daughter of Jean Joseph d Albenas an officer in the Touraine regiment who distinguished himself in the American War of Independence before settling in Toulouse Athénaïs is wearing a high waisted light coloured dress with puffed sleeves in the style popular with women in the late First Empire The slanting light which illuminates the young girl s silhouette from top to bottom differs from that of the landscape It actually corresponds to the light in the studio in which the young model posed The undulating landscape is just a backdrop framing the portrait a technique used by the early studio photographers With its pretty sky dotted with clouds and succession of light and dark grounds it follows the rules of composition for a traditional landscape and draws the eye from the factory on top of the hill towards a waterfall spanned by a little bridge in the foreground Boilly s work which describes the life of the middle classes in Parisian society in stylised scenes was very popular under the Empire and up until the 1830s From 1800 onwards his compositions became more complex and were peopled with numerous figures As wry descriptions of modern life they are meticulously executed with a refined palette The artist became enthusiastic about the new technique of lithography and blazed the trail for a long line of 19th century caricaturists with his Recueil de grimaces Compendium of Grimaces published in 1823 which was to influence Daumier His gift for observation and the need to provide a source of income led him to paint a large number of portraits in every style family portraits La famille Gohin 1787 Paris

  • Le Petit Palais - Old Man with a Stick - petitpalais.paris.fr
painter was based in a workshop in the south of France where he had been invited by Van Gogh The two artists lived and worked very intensively there Gauguin arrived from Pont Aven where he had just painted an exceptional picture entitled Vision of the Sermon Edinburgh National Gallery of Scotland Moving definitively away from Impressionism he developed an original style and intensified the colours that he used arbitrarily Vincent who had been based in the south of France since February 1888 painted luminous sunflowers He was also mainly concerned with painting self portraits and portraits I want to paint men and women with that something of the eternal which the halo used to symbolise Letter from Vincent to Theo 3 September 1888 It was in this state of mind that in August 1888 he painted a portrait of Patience Escalier an old oxherd from the Camargue in front of a bright orange background to suggest a sunset according to Vincent The position of the old man s hands crossed over the stick appears again almost identically in the picture painted by Gauguin during the final weeks of their cohabitation An iconographic detail confirms that the Old Man with a Stick was painted in the house in Arles the armchair on which his left arms rests is identical to the one painted in a still life by Van Gogh in November Gauguin s Chair Amsterdam Van Gogh Museum and can be recognised in several portraits of this period During these winter months the rain and freezing wind meant they had to work indoors The two friends often painted together in the workshop on the ground floor facing the model sitting in the armchair The sittings would go on into the night in the light of the gas lamps Another clue

  • Le Petit Palais - Ugolino - petitpalais.paris.fr
Plaster patinated 195 x 150 x 110 cm Ugolino which was completed in 1861 marked the end of Carpeaux s studies at the French Academy in Rome This masterly group is no longer the work of a student a fact which did not escape the attention of either the French in Rome or the Parisian administrators of the French School of Fine Art who supported the artist in this huge undertaking The subject is taken from Dante s Divine Comedy in which the poet describes Ugolino the tyrant of Pisa chained and walled up in the Tower of Hunger with his offspring Canto XXXIII When his children see him gnawing his hands in despair they offer themselves to be devoured out of filial piety The work acknowledges its debt to the great models of sculpture the interlacing of bodies is inspired by a famous group of classical antiquity Laocoon in the Vatican Belvedere Palace the musculature and Ugolino s expression recall Michelangelo Each element has been the subject of many sketches and drafts combined in a twisted pyramid shape It is possible to see in this despairing Ugolino Carpeaux the artist himself already tormented by the act of creation debt
