    1883 Oil on canvas 413 5 x 627 cm The theme of the Vale of Tears painted on a huge canvas is inspired by St Matthew s Gospel which recalls the words of Christ Come to me all you who labour and I will give you rest On the threshold of death Gustave Doré summons up the light of faith which triumphs over the pain and death Suffering humanity turns towards the figure of the redeemer Christ carrying his cross The light which radiates from his frail silhouette illuminates an arid mountainous landscape The crowds throng to these steep slopes sovereigns and beggars children and the elderly men and women Their clothes conjure up the Middle East the cradle of Christianity A cradle Catholic with an anxious personality Gustave Doré sought calm in his Christian faith His fascination with Christ leaps out from the paintings in the Doré Gallery This consists of some twenty large canvases commissioned from the artist in 1867 following the huge success of his illustrated Holy Bible Like Manet who was born and died in the same years Doré was attacked by critics who did not understand either the unusual visionary nature of his work or the visual intelligence of his compositions This work found a more appreciative audience in London with the opening of the Doré Gallery between 1869 and 1892 and then in the United States During its twenty four year lifespan the Doré Gallery and its twenty or so canvases received approximately 2 5 million visitors In 1892 most of the paintings were sent to the United States to be exhibited in a touring exhibition lasting until 1898 They then sank into oblivion They were rediscovered in 1947 in a Manhattan warehouse sold at auction and split up Since 1985 three of the

    Ecran de cheminée Escalier de cristal Paris Vers 1885 Palissandre bronze doré et laque le recto et le verso de l écran sont ornés d estampes japonaises kakemono e 92 x 56 x 34 cm À l occasion de l exposition Kuniyosh i un écran de cheminée qui porte l estampille du célèbre magasin de luxe l Escalier de Cristal est présenté en salle 21 dans le parcours des collections permanentes La venue de Madame Iwakiri commissaire scientifique de l exposition Kuniyoshi a permis d identifier les auteurs des estampes japonaises montées sur le panneau coulissant de l écran Côté tablette apparaissent trois personnages L estampe de gauche représente Deux enfants le jour de l an Elle porte le cachet de Kuniyoshi 1797 1861 et peut être datée de 1842 L estampe de droite montrant une femme qui s essuie le visage et sort d un bain public est presque contemporaine de la précédente Elle est datée de 1843 et a été réalisée par Utagawa Kunisada 1786 1864 Au revers deux femmes se font face à gauche la Beauté à la mode est également l œuvre d Utagawa Kunisada qui à partir de 1844 prend le nom de son maître Tokoyuni À droite lui faisant face est portraiturée une Femme en bateau sous la pleine lune C est l estampe la plus tardive de l écran puisqu elle est datée de 1865 et porte le cachet de Gokyōrō Chikayoshi Cet écran en palissandre associé aux bronzes dorés et aux laques avec son panneau à décor d estampes japonaises est un parfait exemple du raffinement et de la qualité des productions de l Escalier de Cristal Fondé à Paris au début du XIXème par Madame Veuve Desarnaud l Escalier de Cristal est dirigé en 1885 époque probable de la fabrication de

    Christian World The Classical World Graphic Arts Photographic Collection Manuscrits et livres Base de données des oeuvres The Tour Donors Museum map Information resource center In 1 click Students Researchers Disabled visitors Press Corporate Partners Newsletter Italian landscape with three knights Pierre Athanase Chauvin Paris 1774 Rome Italy 1832 1806 Oil on canvas 70 5 x 98 cm On the advice of his master Valenciennnes Chauvin travelled to Italy to paint studies in oil in the open air from which he produced harmonious reconstituted landscapes back in his studio In approximately 1801 he shared accommodation with Granet in the former Capucin convent in Paris and met up with his friend again in Rome where he settled permanently in 1804 This historic landscape in the traditional mould with its layering of backgrounds and fine atmospheric effects of perspective on the Alban hills is peopled by three knights in the troubadour style initiated by Ingres a friend of Chauvin in Rome The craggy site depicted is located close to Frascati the pines and cyprus trees in the foreground belong to the Villa Rufinella one of the residences of Lucien Bonaparte and the Villa Mondragone is visible on the left Inventory number PDUT01900
