    The Tour Donors Museum map Information resource center In 1 click Students Researchers Disabled visitors Press Corporate Partners Newsletter Plate François Emile Ehrmann and Théodore Deck François Emile Ehrmann Strasbourg 1833 Paris 1914 and Théodore Deck Guebwiller 1823 Paris 1891 1869 Earthenware and painted wooden frame 79 cm Alsatian born Théodore Deck began his career as a ceramicist in an earthenware stove factory in Strasbourg In 1851 he settled in Paris and opened his own workshop Deck tried to rediscover the manufacturing and decorating techniques of the old factories He copied and interpreted Saint Porchaire ceramics Iznik earthenware and Italian majolica Eclectic by temperament and by training Deck also demonstrated his qualities as an inventor and discoverer He succeeded in creating a turquoise blue known as Deck blue and perfected a technique for creating gold backgrounds which won him a Grand Prize at the Universal Exhibition in 1878 His growing fame culminated in his appointment as head of the Sèvres porcelain factory in 1887 Deck collaborated on many occasions with painters and sculptors notably Albert Anker Raphaël Collin and François Ehrmann who provided the design for this plate Ehrmann drew much of his inspiration for this neo Renaissance pastiche from

    19th century The 18th century The 17th century Renaissance The Western Christian World The Eastern Christian World The Classical World Graphic Arts Photographic Collection Manuscrits et livres Base de données des oeuvres The Tour Donors Museum map Information resource center In 1 click Students Researchers Disabled visitors Press Corporate Partners Newsletter Jardinière Paul Gauguin Paris 1848 Atuana 1903 Circa 1886 1887 Partially painted and enalled stoneware incised and modelled decoration 13 3 x 15 5 x 11 5 cm Gauguin met the ceramicist Chaplet in 1886 He worked with him to decorate several wheel produced ceramics at the same time as making hand modelled pieces by himself They were often vases and pots with one or two holes and several handles often resembling pre Columbian pottery The partially exposed stoneware is decorated with paint or enamel and engraved with lines This decorative technique is reminiscent of the Cloisonnism that Gauguin practised during the same period in his paintings Between 1886 and 1895 Gauguin created a hundred of so vases pots and jugs mostly produced in Paris when he returned from his travels There are only about sixty left Inventory number ODUT1787 Inventory number ODUT1787 Acquisition details Acquired in 1994 Room

    Base de données des oeuvres The Tour Donors Museum map Information resource center In 1 click Students Researchers Disabled visitors Press Corporate Partners Newsletter Pair of chairs from the Gothic study of the Comtesse d Osmond François Honoré Georges Jacob know as Jacob Desmalter Paris 1770 Paris 1841 circa 1817 1820 Gilded and carved wood modern upholstery 146 x 54 cm The chair backs bear a crest with the coat of arms of the Osmond family topped with a count s crown and the motto Nihil obstat In 1817 Aimée Destillères married Rainulphe d Osmond aide de camp of the Duke of Angoulême and son of the Marquis d Osmond French ambassador to England The Comtesse d Osmond s Gothic study occupied a room in her town house in the chaussée d Antin district on the rue Basse du Rempart The Comtesse d Osmond decorated a reception room in the troubadour style at the far end of the first floor gallery overlooking the boulevard With their high backs in the shape of Gothic windows the Comtesse d Osmond s chairs are some of the earliest examples of the cathedral style which became widespread in France principally between 1825 and 1835

    Information resource center In 1 click Students Researchers Disabled visitors Press Corporate Partners Newsletter The Titans Jardinière Auguste Rodin and Albert Carrier Belleuse Choisy Le Roi earthenware factory managed by Hippolyte Boulanger Auguste Rodin Paris 1840 Meudon 1917 Albert Carrier Belleuse Anisy Le Château 1824 Sèvres 1887 Circa 1877 Earthenware Diamètre inférieur 22 cm Diamètre supérieur 36 cm The Titans Jardinière consists of a plinth decorated with four masculine figures on which sits a vase decorated with lizards and leaves The general composition of the vase can be attributed to Albert Carrier Belleuse the great ornamental sculptor of the second half of the nineteenth century who employed Rodin in his workshop several times between 1864 and 1882 The powerful modelling of the four telamones and their poses in the manner of Michelangelo have encouraged some specialists to suggest that Rodin was the main creator of the plinth The Titan jardinière has been compared to works dating from Rodin s Brussels period such as the Monument to the Burgermeister Loos with which there is a clear affinity Acquired by the Petit Palais in 2004 the Titan jardinière is one of three complete examples including both plinth and bowl held in public
