    Donors Museum map Information resource center In 1 click Students Researchers Disabled visitors Press Corporate Partners Newsletter Poseidon or Zeus Hybrisstas Production Arcadia 1st or 2nd quarter of the 5th century BC Provenance Epidaure Bronze H 17 cm The statue represents a naked youth in motion His feet rest on an irregularly shaped plaque bearing the words Hybrisstas made me This type of inscription is extremely rare on a bronze and reveals the maker s name Study of its characteristics suggest it is Arcadian in origin with Tegea as the most likely place of manufacture The fairly crude and sketchy technique used on the features the unbalanced structure with its very disproportionately protruding eyes seem to argue in favour of an archaic period work from the 7th to the 6th century BC a dating which has been accepted for some time However despite the crude nature of the incisions on certain anatomical details the suppleness of the pose and the animation of the limbs involved in movement suggest a revised dating placing the bronze among the works of the early 5th century BC and the crude technique overall tallies well with what is known of the Arcadian workshops Unfortunately the statuette lacks the attributes which it would have held providing a definite identification The right hand has disappeared snapped at the wrist and part of the left hand is missing The pose which can only indicate an Olympian deity could just as easily be Zeus brandishing a thunderbolt as Poseidon holding a trident On the back of the right hand the eagle of Zeus or the dolphin of the god of the seas could have rested However the position of the flexed fingers does not allow a decision to be made with complete certainty either way Inventory number ADUT00007 Inventory

    Tryphon Probably produced in Sidon 1st century AD Provenance Phenicia Blown glass shaped in a bivalve mould H 10 5 cm D 8 cm In the second half of the 1st century BC the invention of glass blowing constituted a real revolution in the production of glass objects Used in combination with moulds it allowed vases of all shapes to be mass produced mechanically at an affordable price Perfumers attracted by their shape and transparency were keen to use them to sell their costly creations These little vases in the shape of the head of a young Ethiopian slave were probably used for this purpose The design harks back to the ceramics produced by the Athenian workshops The young Ethiopian can be represented as serious as is the case here or crowned with ivy and grinning broadly Unusually the Petit Palais goblet bears a signature which means it can be traced to an eastern glassblowing workshop The discovery of two unsigned vases of this type in Pompeii bears witness to the popularity of this style as far afield as Italy Aside from the presence of the signature the composition of the glass gives this head flask the rare distinction of

    map Information resource center In 1 click Students Researchers Disabled visitors Press Corporate Partners Newsletter Plaque in cameo glass satyr holding out a bunch of grapes to the child Dionysus Anonymous Production Italy 1st half of the 1st century AD Augustan era Three layers of superimposed glass white blue and white H 21 cm w 19 cm The Dutuit Plaque was created using a glass making technique similar to that used for cameos This technique is only familiar on account of some twenty or so objects vases and panels of which the Portland Vase in the British Museum is the most famous example This plaque is decorated with a Dionysian scene In a rural countryside setting a young satyr sat on a rock is holding out a bunch of grapes to the child Dionysus Dionysian themes were extremely popular in the decorative arts of the era of Augustus The Dutuit Plaque is closest in style to the Portland Vase in the British Museum dating from the Augustan period However in the landscapes on the other cameo glass items the rocks have a more architectural character The young satyr s rustic seat has its equivalent only in decorative reliefs or in cameos such as the Naples cameo The theme of the child Dionysus raised by nymphs playing with satyrs on the hill of Nysa the rocky seat of the young satyr and the taste for nature expressed here recall the Greek creations in the 4th century BC of Praxiteles the creator of the Hermes and Dionysus of Olympus or Lysippus an artist whose work took him to the court of Macedonia to Alexandria and to Sicily His Dionysus on Helicon from Thespies was sat on a rock with his left leg tucked under him heel uppermost and his right leg extended

    are those found at Mildenhall Chaource Kaiseraugst Carthage and on the Esquiline hill all spread across the western part of the Empire subject to barbarian invasions which the eastern regions did not experience until the 7th century Twenty seven pieces of silver constitute the find of 1793 incorrectly known as a treasure The term treasure refers to a collection of items of varying provenance and from different periods some of them inherited which constitute a financial reserve buried in haste in the face of imminent threat on which the owner can draw This is not the case here The Esquiline items were made within a fairly brief time span and twenty two of them came from the same workshop According to the monograms and inscriptions found on various objects they belonged to several members of the same family the gens Turcia The presence of four statuettes depicting the four metropolises of the Empire Rome Constantinople inaugurated by Constantine in 330 Alexandria and Antioch linked to the public domain and ceremonial place the whole collection in the second half of the 4th century It also indicated that their owners occupied an elevated position either by wealth or rank Like the Projecta Casket in the British Museum the most famous piece of the treasure the patera belongs to the private domain The main face of the casket produced in the Esquiline workshop depicts the scene of Venus at her toilet Although the patera does not come from this workshop it displays the same motif treated in a similar vein The body of the vase is treated like the shell from which the goddess of Beauty emerged The young hunter depicted on the handle spear in hand with a dog at his heel is clearly recognisable as the handsome Adonis whom the goddess

    AD Provenance Rome Bronze Hollow cast Silver brass and black patinated copper alloy ornamentation H 71 cm This exceptional bronze was discovered in September 1880 in the via del Babuino in the foundations of the English church In the absence of the tributes which he would have held Bacchus is identifiable by the band decorated with corymbs fastening his hair The composition refers to a famous model for statuary influenced by the works of Praxiteles the Woburn Abbey Dionysos crated circa 350 BC depicting a young naked Dionysos for the first time The god holds a thyrsus staff in his left hand and a canthare drinking vessel in his right hand There are some twenty known copies and variants In some versions the god is accompanied by a panther as was thought to be the case with the Bacchus of the via del Babuino However in 1965 the statuette was reunited with its original base which had found its way into the collections of the New York Metropolitan Museum thus ruling out this hypothesis Inventory number ADUT00005 Inventory number ADUT00005 Acquisition details Dutuit bequest 1902 Room 33 Rome and the Roman Empire The Classical World Roll your mouse over the

    Ceramic with black figures on a bistre background H 15 cm and 15 5 cm These two little lekythoi with their unusual shape and original decoration created by the same potter and decorated by a single painter form a pair which is also very rare They belong to the small group of vases known as anacreontic In the archaic period the Greek elite were looking to the East for new models Writers such as Sappho Alkaios Mimnermos and Anacreon to name but a few vied with each other in praising the life of luxury and finery of eastern aristocrats whom they claimed rightly combined the twin privileges of birth and politics Lydians were the perfect embodiment of this way of life and thought Therefore Anacreon the first exponent of this ideal declared himself to be Lydopatheis afflicted with acute Lydopathy as we might say today This Lydopath wore long flowing robes favoured gold jewellery and elaborate hairstyles He used copious amounts of perfume drank wine enjoyed music and everything that stimulated the senses The decoration of anacreontic vases refers to this world Produced approximately between 530 and 470 they depict men in long unbelted robes wearing earrings and a type of turban known as the mitra They wear either boots made of soft skin or sandals They often carry a parasol and a Lydian lyre the barbiton At a first glance this attire appears to be feminine Moreover three vases of this type bear the name of the poet Anacreon They were therefore thought to represent Anacreon and his merry companions In actual fact the costume is not effeminate but Lydian The dress and accessories hark back to an eastern aristocratic ideal which Anacreon championed and which the Greeks aped at their banquets Inventory number ADUT00346 and ADUT00347 Inventory number

    Rome Circa 30 BC Provenance Les Fins d Annecy Boutae Bronze H 62 cm A neo Attic school developed in Greece and Italy in the late 2nd century BC It exploited the new market for classicist styles inspired by the masterpieces of the 5th and 4th centuries Large numbers of marble and more rarely bronze copies of originals were produced The Fins d Annecy Ephebe created between 50 and 30 BC after the original by Polykleitos is a perfect illustration of this late Republic art form How did this single statuette come to be in Gaul It was perhaps in the luggage of a high ranking figure taking office there or was brought back from Rome by one of the local members of the Romanised elite Was it originally designed as a devotional object The divine attribute now broken which was held in the left hand was added at an unknown date In what form was the statue venerated therefore Perhaps as Hermes the caduceus carrier or the benevolent spirit with the cornucopia symbol of fertile harvests Bonus Eventus The collection of bronzes discovered at Fins d Annecy in 1867 offers a striking summary of local history This statuette broken

    the garden of the Hesperides Anonymous Production Athens Circa 360 BC Provenance Tanagra Boeotia Yellowish clay red figures numerous white highlights Exports of Athenian ceramics to northern Greece which began in the 5th century BC continued throughout the following century This accounts for the discovery of a number of Attic vases in Boeotia notably in Tanagra Based on these discoveries the most popular type of vase in Boeotia was the chalice shaped crater which has a more slender form than in the previous century The popularity of this shape is perhaps associated with local cult practices In the figurative repertoire Herakles holds a privileged position alongside Dionysos but he is quite different from the hero of the classical era He is rarely depicted performing his labours with the exception of his stay in the garden of the Hesperides However this episode is depicted in a totally new light The hero no longer fights the snake guarding the tree with the golden apples or carries the world on his shoulders in place of Atlas A younger clean shaven naked Herakles simply bearing on his head the Nemean lion skin sits peacefully in a luxuriant garden prefiguring the Elysian Fields watching the
